Photography Scholarship Available

The 2010 Photography Scholarship from the Alexia Foundation is now accepting applications. Even though this is considered a Photography Scholarship you do not have to be an extraordinary picture taker. Unlike many Photography Scholarship opportunities, this is not an portfolio contest. Rather, this is a contest on the best picture story. So, what is a picture story anyway? It is where you take a set of of pictures, usually 10 to 20, that makes up a story or documentary covering a certain topic. For the Photography Scholarship being offered by the Alexia Foundation, the topic is a picture story that explains your idea for a set of pictures that will promote world peace and cultural understanding.

This is a perfect Photography Scholarship if you are socially conscious and think you can tell a story. You can find examples of past winners on the website, which will give you some idea of what they are looking for. Also on the site there are the full rules to the scholarship.

Applications must be received by February 1, 2010 to be eligible.

The winner of the scholarship will receive a full scholarship ($15,000) to study photojournalism in London for the fall semester through Syracuse University Abroad. There is also other smaller scholarships that will be awarded.

Denny’s restaurant has awarded 30 students with a single parent scholarship in conjunction with the Hispanic College Fund.

To qualify, the student has to be of Hispanic background and a full-time undergraduate student pursuing a degree in any discipline. The student must also be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident residing in the United States or Puerto Rico and have demonstrated a financial need, as stated in terms.

One of those students selected, Veronica Trejo, stated, “I was very excited to hear that I was selected for this scholarship. I am 33 years old and a single mother of two young girls and this takes a burden off of our shoulders. Being a single parent has been difficult and trying at times, but I am honored Denny’s is willing to extend a helping hand to those single parents who struggle to get by every day.”

More and more businesses and schools are offering scholarships to single dads and parents, as this demographic of student is on the increase.
