Scholarship for Maine Residents Touched by ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS, is diagnosed in one or two out of 100,000 people each year. This is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease. And while the body fails, the mind is almost always intact making this a very difficult disease not only for the person suffering with it but also family members and caregivers.

In 2000 Joseph W. Mayo was stricken with this disease and friends established this ALS scholarship in his honor to recognize his contributions as a father, friend, and public servant. This scholarship was established to assist men and women who are children, stepchildren, grandchildren, spouses, domestic partners, or primary caregivers of ALS patients and is awarded annually to a student (or students) who are attending a post-secondary educational institution, including both four-year colleges and two-year associate programs. The recipient must be a graduate of a Maine high school or GED program.
