Scholarship for Children of Highway Workers

We may not give much thought to the men and women that we see working at the side of the roads other than how much the construction is tying up traffic, but, unfortunately, these people are sometimes killed or permanently disabled while working their jobs. And this can leave children without parents and a source of income.

This is the reason for the Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship. It is a scholarship program open to children, either biological or adopted, who have had a parent permanently disabled or killed in roadway construction zone accidents and the applicant’s parent must have been employed by a transportation construction firm or a transportation public agency at the time of his or her death or disabling
injury.

The scholarship applicant must also have a GPA of a 2.5, demonstrate a financial need, submit an essay on required topic.

Scholarship application must be postmarked by March 19th in order to be eligible. To find out more information go here.

Disability Scholarship

If you depend on a wheelchair for mobility and need a scholarship then you need to apply for a disability scholarship being offered for wheelchair using students. This is not only open to high school students, but it is also open to adults, including dads, who are wheelchair dependent.

This scholarship is offered by AmeriGlide. AmeriGlide offers lift items for those with mobility difficulties. This includes items such as stair lifts, bathroom lifts, and dumbwaiters.

To be eligible for this disability scholarship, interested applicants must:

  • Use a manual or electric wheelchair
  • Be enrolled in an accredited two or four-year college
  • Have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • A legal resident of the US

This year’s essay question to be answered in order to enter this disability scholarship contest is (choose one):

  • What area of your school do you think would benefit from improved accessibility and how would you improve it?
  • What area of your school do you feel has excellent accessibility and why?

This scholarship is awarded twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Application deadline is December 31, 2009. To find out more go here.
