Scholarships Available for Heroism
Up to five New Jersey students will be rewarded for their acts of heroism if selected to receive a Dana Christmas Scholarship for Heroism. This New Jersey Scholarship is named for a heroic young woman, Dana Christmas, who is credited with saving the lives of Seton Hall University students when a fire broke out in the Boland Hall dormitory in 2000. It was her selfless efforts that prompted the Legislature to create the scholarship program honoring students who perform exceptional acts of heroism.
Candidates for the scholarship must be nominated and an application must be submitted on their behalf describing the act. Students must have been 21 years or younger at the time of the act and at the time of the application. The applications will be reviewed to determine which applicants meet the spirit of the scholarship through having acted in an extraordinary way at great risk to their own personal safety to benefit the lives of others. Students must meet citizenship and selected service requirements in order to be considered.
The scholarships are intended to assist the students to meet higher education costs.Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 awards; the deadline is Oct. 15.
Application and nomination forms can be obtained at www.hesaa.org.
