Helping Dads Find Money for School

Applying for Scholarships – Increase Your Chances at Winning a Scholarship

Steps to Help You Get A Scholarship

Who can resist applying for scholarships. Heck, it is free money for school that never requires repayment, and it does not get much better than that. But what can you do to increase your chances at winning a scholarship?

  1. Follow Directions:So think about it. How many people do you think are applying for scholarships right now? I will bet a lot. And following directions is a must if you want to increase your chances at winning a scholarship. These judges have a lot of applications to sift through and if they ask for no more than 4 pages, then do not send in more because you think it will increase your chances at winning. These judges have to narrow down the field, and if you cannot follow directions from the very beginning, then tossing out those applications is the easiest way to whittle down the stack.
  2. Apply Even if You are Not a Straight “A” Student:Unless the scholarship specifically asks for you to have a 4.0 GPA or be in the top 5% of your class, you should start applying for scholarships that fit your strengths. Scholarship committees are looking for well-rounded students and good citizens. They want to feel that the money they award will go to help a “good” kid get an education. So unless the scholarship is based purely on academics, go ahead and apply.
  3. Don’t Use Complicated Words in Your Application: You can increase your chances at winning a scholarship by using intelligent sentences and words. Do not think that the bigger the words the better chance you have at getting some money, as you may use them in the wrong context, thus decreasing the overall effectiveness of your essay.
  4. Mention Previous Jobs in Essay: Even if they are just part-time jobs, this will show responsibility on your part. And don’t forget to state the reasons you are working. Is it to help save for college, help your family financially, or some other great reason?
  5. Set Yourself Apart: If you want to stand out in a crowd, then talk about your strengths and sometimes your weaknesses. For instance, if you have had to overcome hurdles in order to be a good student or if you have been unable to grow due to being sheltered. Whatever you can think of that may set you apart from the rest of the applications can increase your chances at winning scholarships.

Sometimes finding scholarships can be the easy part but applying for scholarships can be quite time consuming, so you want to be sure that your time is well spent. By following the above steps, you can increase your chances at winning scholarships and setting yourself apart from all of the others.
