Scholarships for Veterans at North Georgia Tech

Thanks to a $20,000 anonymous donation for an endowed scholarship that the North Georgia Technical Foundation received, scholarships for veterans will be being offered this fall. The scholarship money is coming from the interest accumulated from this fiscal donation and will be awarded to veterans who need further financial assistance in order to be able to attend North Georgia Tech.

In order to be able to apply for this veteran scholarship, you must be an honorably discharged veteran of the United States, have completed the FAFSA with a corresponding unmet financial need, and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above and possess and a work ethic
grade of at least 2.0.

This military scholarship will hopefully entice some of our nation’s much appreciated veterans to return back to school in order to provide a better life for themselves and their families.

The deadline for the scholarships for veterans is September 7th. To get more information for the veteran scholarship program, email cbrown@northgatech.edu or call 706-754-7714.

Nursing scholarships will be given to eight students who are enrolled in the University at Buffalo School of Nursing’s accelerated nursing program. This particular nursing program is open to students who already have obtained a Bachelors degree in another discipline and are able to get a nursing degree in 12 months of full-time study.

The program is designed to address America’s severe nurse shortage, which is expected to reach a quarter of a million by 2025. In the next 10 years, Western New York is slated to face RN shortfalls of 32 percent in Erie County. That shortage grows to as high as 66 percent in rural areas.

These nursing scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $10,000 thanks to money that UB was given, totalling $80,000 in scholarship money, by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. These scholarships are given out to help in increasing enrollment and enhance diversity including those students considered underrepresented in nursing by gender, race or financial status.

The lucky eight nursing students have yet to be selected to receive these nursing scholarships. And it is reported that early next year is when they will likely be selected. Winners of these scholarships for nurses in the accelerated program will likely be based on financial need and academic performance.

“Students returning for a second degree may have many more personal, family and financial challenges,” says Grinslade, “and they may be the primary wage earner in the family.”

“This scholarship can be used for tuition, household expenses or sustenance in general.”
